Brands & News Sites among Winners from Google’s Freshness
Google rolled out its new ranking algorithm Google Freshness on 4th November 2011 and ever since Google introduced its latest algorithm the well known internet marketing company SearchMetrics produced a detailed list of winners and losers of brands and companies.
Earlier the same company has released “Panda-related winners and losers” several times. SearchMetrics uses a “visibility score” that analyzes a number of keywords and then produce the most appropriate result.
Google Freshness Algorithm Winners: As you would expect news sites are again at the top of the list of winners. Since the main goal of Google Freshness was to provide the most updated and fresh results to users it was obvious to be ranked at the top of the winner’s list for these news sites.
However the amazing fact about this list was the appearance of several travel related sites like Hotels.com, NationalCar.com and SouthWestVacations.com. Asides these sites like PapaJohns.com, Dominos.com and other Pizza related sites are at the top rung of this winning ladder.
Google freshness Algorithm losers: However, there are many sites in the news arena too that has not get listed in the list of winners and this includes sites like independent.co.uk, top government site of New Zealand, CPSC.gov, Americanexpress.com and Capitalone.com that are among the losers.
What the heck is all about: In-fact Google has long been facing challenges from social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook to provide the most updated and fresh updates to its users and to achieve this they collaborated with Twitter to share content. However the deal ended up on 2009 and due to some reasons the deal couldn’t be continued.
Ever since the deal was discontinued there have been a continuous threat from these social media sites to Google. Launch of social networking site Google+ was one of those measures to tackle such threat and Google freshness is another attempt to prove its dominance in the search engine arena.
Main features of Google Freshness
Google will automatically rank current events: Initially when users use to put keywords like President Election or something like Oscar award the search engine returned results for president election 10 years back or 2 years back. With this update Google will be smart enough to understand that the user is looking for the latest and current presidential election even if the keyword put was President Election.
Similarly if someone has typed the keyword Oscar award ceremony then Google will return the most current Oscar award ceremony and not the event that has happened 10 years back.
Recent updates of a brand: Another important thing that has happened with this is that it will automatically return the latest version of brands. For example if someone has typed the keyword Apple-i-pad it will automatically return those documents that say something about the most latest version of the brand. Here it would be Apple i-pad that was launched in 2011 and snot in previous dates.
How Google freshness is different from Google caffeine: Google works on the basis of indexing and ranking. Indexing is one phenomenon and ranking is another phenomenon. Indexing decides when and how documents would be indexed like on daily basis, weekly basis, fortnightly or monthly.
Initially Google used to index documents monthly. So, if you have made some changes to your website content the day after Google completed its indexing it wouldn’t be index after one month the next date scheduled for indexing. This fluctuation in result was also called as Google dance.
But Google freshness is not an indexing algorithm it’s a ranking algorithm that will decide how a particular document will be ranked. Like if a user has typed in the keyword President election then it would rank the most current one at the top of the search engine result page and documents that say about previous Presidential election at the lower rung of the search engine result page.
