The URL of your web-page is the first thing that search engines encounters while crawling and indexing a web-page in the World Wide Web. Search engine optimizers and web-developers used to invest a huge amount of time and effort in restructuring their URLs. A URL that is placing enough contextual signals to search engines is the best option to go for.

With the advent of dynamic website it has become very important for search engine optimizer to restructure their URL to make it more search engine friendly.

With this article we have come up with n article that explains all those possible ways that can be used to restructure the URL f a web-page and make it more search engine friendly. So, let’s run over through those tools and techniques:

Dynamic URLs: A dynamic URL pulls the text of the URL from the code or data and not from the title of the content. A dynamic URL can easily be recognized and identified on the basis of parameters that it contains like ?, = and &.

A good example of a dynamic URL can be something like this
www.mycompany.com/product.php?id=14532&color=4&size=5&session=54367.
A general perception among webmasters and designers is that search engine crawlers couldn’t read such link or if can, a major part of the URL is truncated, which is not the case. In fact the major reasons for a dynamic URL being unfriendly to search engine is that a dynamic URL doesn’t contain any keyword and hence couldn’t send any contextual signal to search engine pertaining what the page is all about and which keyword describes it the most.

Asides, the id, color, size and session parameters that it contains might get repeated with other content of the website thus making the URL more prone to duplicate content. Third thing that can be argued is that a dynamic URL is not user-friendly as it couldn’t give any contextual signal to the users about the content which could compromise the click-through-rat of the web-page.
Last and final argument that can be given in an attempt to oppose the relevancy of a dynamic URL is that a long URL is never preferred by search engines. If a web-master can get all the benefits of a URL with a short one, I don’t see any reason for webmasters to go for long URLs. So, the disadvantages of a dynamic URL can be listed as follows:

• A dynamic URL doesn’t contain any keyword
• A dynamic URL is more prone to duplicate content
• A dynamic content tend to be less user-friendly, thus decreasing the click-through-rate of the content
• A dynamic URL tends to be less search engine friendly due to its length.

Unstructured URLs: There is a common perception in the search engine arena is that they focus more on the structural organization of the website by segregating the web-pages into various folders and subfolders. But a deep page always tend to have less link-juice compared to a flat one, no matter how organized and well structured it is.

One argument can be put in support of a structured URL is that a well-structured URL is carries more information and meaning for visitors. But, the point to be considered is that it is also long and most of the relevant keywords are pushed at the end which is not preferred by search engines. Hence, keeping all these points in mind my opinion would lean towards a flat and unstructured URL.

Long and redundant URLs: A URL should be structured in such a way that it conveys some meaning to search engines and users. A long and redundant URL may compromise the usability and click-through-rate of the web-page. A URL may get cut-off when people bookmark or copy it in their browsers. A long URL may get cut-off by social media application and is harder to remember.
Stuffing keywords in URL: Unnecessarily putting and stuffing a keyword in the URL of a web-page makes the web-page less-valuable in the eyes of search engines and will be deemed as keyword stuffing.

Amid stiff competition from various social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter Google has started incorporating Google+ results into its search results. The latest integration is possible via the “rel=author” tag that Google launched in last summer.

Simply put, Google has started linking the Author information image in their main search engine result page. The move is definitely going to give Google an edge over its competitor like Facebook and twitter.

As you can see in the above image I searched for the keyword “SEO news” and the second result that appeared has the image and a byline of Greg Sterling. When we click on this image we can get into the Google+ profile of the person with this image. This is for the first time that Google has integrated content of Google+ in its search result.

The move is definitely going to be a brainstorming incidence for Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter that had dominated the social networking arena since last 5 years as it will compel users to switch on to Google+ keeping Facebook and Twitter aside.

How is it possible: Last year Google came up with an important mark-up tag “Author” and the attribute that can be added to it is “rel”. This markup and attribute can be used by authors to link their pages up with a content that will let search engine return all the content written by the same author in the World Wide Web. The code that can be used to define the author name of content is as follows:

Written by steve
Hence, quietly and slowly Google is promoting its social networking site Google+ from backdoor and is definitely going to be a matter of concern for Facebook and Twitter. And the move is going to mandate webmasters and website designers to have an account on Google+.

Google’s panda update has been a nightmare for webmasters and designers. Since its launch it has frowned up many sites which included associatedcontent.com, ezinearticles.com, ehow.com and many more.

The basic objective of Google panda was to punish thin and duplicate content and provide the most relevant and appealing contents to its users.

Viewing the importance and significance of duplicate contents we have come up with an article that describes how to avoid duplicate contents for your website.

Use 404 redirection technique: One of the best tools to avoid duplicate content is 404 redirection. When a web-page has no more value or has lost its power to generate traffic then it is better to remove the page totally. In case you are not willing to remove it permanently from your website or if takes complete restructuring of your website to remove the page a 404 option could be the most preferred option. When 404 redirection is applied on a web-page the browser returns page couldn’t be found pop-up.

Use 301 redirect: Another way to move a page is via 301 redirect. When we use 301 redirect the browser tells the search engine that the page has been moved to a new destination. This redirection helps webmasters greatly when we want to shift our contents to a new website and want the link juices to be passed to the new one.

Using robots.txt files: When we want contents to remain available for visitors but want to block search engines from crawling it, we use robots.txt files. All the files that we want not be crawled by search engine crawlers reside in the robot.txt folder which itself resides at the root folder of your website.

The code looks something like this in your source page:
User-agent *
Disallow : /dupe-page.htm
Disallow : /dupe-folder

All the factors discussed above are domain levels activities which are done at the level of domain. However there are some page levels tools available these days which can help webmasters and designers avid duplicate contents in their website. Some of which are as follows:
Meta robots: Wit meta robots we control the behavior of the search engine crawlers at the page level. To achieve this we use a header level directive known as Meta Robots tag to avoid search engine bots crawling a particular web-page.

The directive tells search bots not to index as well as not to follow links on it. Since these tag can created dynamically as per the adjacent code using Meta robot is more convenient and SEO friendly.
The code would look something like this:

<meta name= “robots” content= NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW” />

Cannonicalizing URLs:

Cannonicalizing duplicate content is another important method by means of which we can avoid being penalized for duplicate contents. When search engines lands to a page with canonical attribute they deem the canonicalized page as the original page and pass all link juice to the canonical version of the same.
The canonicalization is done as follows:

Link rel= “canonical” href=http://www.example.com

Google URL removal: Google URL removal is the last and final defensive mechanism that a webmaster can have. Since with this tool only one page is removed at a time and that too remains at Google’s discretion it is not the most favored option available to avoid duplication of contents.

In order to achieve this, webmasters need to go to Google Webmaster Tools then they want to go to “Site configuration”> “crawler access and then will appear 3 tabs. Out of these 3 tabs one will be “Remove URL”. Click on this remove URL tag and you can delete the concerned URL

Amid legal allegations from US Senator Mike Lee of cooking its search results to favor its own products and sites Google discloses its 10 new search algorithms to appease US federal circuit. However these are only a few of the ranking algorithms that Google used to rank a particular site nonetheless it is going to affect the perception of the Federal circuit about the search giant Google.

Important changes in ranking algorithms of Google are as follows:
Improved snippets: With this new algorithm Google would be looking more into the main content of the web-page rather than relying much on the title, header, and other navigational menu. So, with this change webmasters are forced to create more appealing and user friendly content to rank their web-page high in the search engine result page.

Rich snippets: Another important change that users may notice sin the search engine result page of Google is that the text snippets will be richer. For example if a web-page has got reviews from various review sites it would be included into the web-page snippets in the SERP.

Better page title by using less anchor texts: Google would be smart enough to recognize and not rank the web-page on the basis of links present in the boiler-plate region like blogroll, global navigational menu, header and footer. However it doesn’t mean that they would be neglected completely its semantic value will still be retained but Google would not impart any page rank or algorithmic value to these links.

Autocomplete and translation changes: Cross language information retrieval: The change in this part is going to change and improve the way Google perform its autocomplete IME queries. This algorithm would be important in predicting results in languages like Hebrew, Russian and Arabic.

Google freshness will be implemented: With this change Google will be emphasizing more on contents and events that are current and ongoing. Or in other words we can say that Google would be more inclined towards current events, hot events and recurring events. This change is going to affect almost 35% of Google search.

Detailing about this change Google’s distinguished spam engineer Matt cut said “We found that boilerplate links with duplicated anchor text are not as relevant, so we are putting less emphasis on these anchor texts”.

According to the latest happenings in the field of search engine arena Google rolls out its new and updated ranking algorithm called as “Google freshness” on Thursday 3rd November 2011. The move was viewed as an initiative step to nullify the threats posed by major social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook that use to return more fresh, current and updated results to its viewers.

According to search engine experts Google sniffed a threat to its search engine dominance after the rolling out and popularity of social networking sites like twitter and Facebook. Thus, the moot point of this change was to provide the most updated, current and fresh results to its users in the search engine result page.

Major changes in this update could be summarized as follows:

Recent events or hot topics: According to this new update Google search will bring up results that are most recent and currents news and events like President Election and Oscar award ceremony. Even though the user put in the keyword President Election Google will be smart enough to recognize that the user is looking for 2011 President Election and not 10 years back.

Recent updates of a brand: The algorithm also equips Google to provide the most updated result for a brand seven if the user has typed the same keyword. For example if someone type-in the keyword Apple i-phone Google will return the most latest version of the Apple i-pad and not the old one.

Ranking Algorithmic change: Unlike Google caffeine which was indexing algorithm Google freshness is a ranking algorithm in which Google mainly focused on which one should be ranked high irrespective of the timing of their indexing. On the contrary Google caffeine was an algorithm which was meant to determine how contents should be indexed an archived in Google database like weekly or daily basis.

Providing the most updated and fresh results has always been a challenging tasks for Google and it said that it has always been looking for latest developments and product that could provide real search to its users. In its early attempts Google collaborated with Twitter in order to provide the most recent news to its users in 2009.

Users could have accessed real time information with the URL google.com/realtime in which Google paid to Twitter for the latest information. However the collaboration ended and last year the two companies couldn’t agree on terms to renew it.

Talking to newspersons Google engineer Amit Singhal told that however this is not the only update These are “We just realized that people expect Google to return the most up-to-date results for all kinds of queries, from hot topics to more general queries like a TV show”.

Talking to newspersons Google engineer Amit Singhal told that however this is not the only update that we wish to stop we have decided to pull data from our latest social networking site Google+.

Why We Need To Optimize URL?
The structure of your url is something which search engines cares for a lot. It is the design and structure of your URL that tells the search engine what the content is all about and for which keyword it should be returned to users. Hence it is imperative that your url is designed and structured in such a way that it becomes search engine friendly and rank your content high in the search engine result page.

Viewing the importance and significance of url we have come up with some basic facts that can help web-masters and designers optimizing their url for major search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing.

So, Let’s run through those basic facts:

#1 Convert Dynamic URL To Static URL
A dynamic approach to your website is important from user point of view. However when we talk about search engines a dynamic url have many complications from search engine point of view. A url which contain symbols like “=” “?” and “&” means it is a dynamic url however it doesn’t send any contextual signal to search engines hence it is imperative that a dynamic url should be converted into static url.

Let’s see this example
A website with dynamic url would look something like this
http://www.seopeace.com/product.php?category=seo&products=hub-page
As you can see the url is very complex and dynamic and it would be better if it is converted into static format like this
http://www.seopeace.com/seo/product/hub-page

#2 Separate Multiple Keywords In URL Using Hyphens (Dashes)
If your url consists of multiple keywords then it is imperative to use hyphens or dash to separate two or more than two words. When we use hyphen or dash then search engines get clear perception about what your page is and can send contextual signals to search engines about your content. Anything other than this like underscore and space are not considered by search engines.

For example if your url is http://www.seopeace.com/seo/keyword_research we can separate each words with dash or hyphens like http://www.seo-peace.com/seo/keyword-research/ which is more search engine friendly than the previous one

#3 Limit the Number Of Words In Your URL
It is a wise idea to limit the number of keywords in your URL. A 5-6 words as your keyword in the url is most appropriate and anything more than this will not be searchable by search engines.

#4 Keep Your URL Structure Unchanged
Web-masters should take it into consideration that once the url is created and indexed by search engines it is not a wise idea to change it frequently and subsequently. And if it is done then you are likely to lose all your link-juices for the old url. Hence it is imperative that webmasters should decide the structure of their url right at the beginning of the website designing. However in rare case if it is urgent to change your url you should redirect your old url to new one. Doing this will keep all your link-juices inact.

#5 Keep Only Keywords In Your URL
Though from user point of view is becomes really important to add is, am, are and other additional words along with the keywords that you are targeting. However these words are not search engine friendly and web-masters should avoid using such words.

#6 Use One Version Of URL To Access Your Web Page
A multiple version of a same url is not a wise idea to make your website search engine friendly. With the latest Panda update Google is frowning up on those contents which are duplicated. Search engines will interpret one url with different version as duplicated content even if the content is different. Hence it is imperative that web-masters should use only one version of url like www.seo-peace.com or seo-peace.com.

#7 Keep the Number Of Subfolders In Your URL To A Small Number
One of the wise ideas to make your url search engine friendly is by making the structure of your website flat. A website having content with 2 or 3 sub-folders deep works much than a content having sub-folders more than this.

#8 Keep Your Primary Keyword Near To the Starting Point of Your URL
The earlier a keyword appears in the url of the content more is its value in the eyes of search engines. Hence webmasters should make every possible effort to make their keywords appear at the earliest in the url.

Developing a website from scratch costs a lot, hence webmasters and developers are using most out of various content management systems available these days. Word Press and Joomla are some of the most important content management systems available these days. There are many blogs and forums available these days which are being used by developers to manage the creation and maintenance of content.

Drupal and Typo3 are some other content management systems utilized these days by web-developers however WordPress and Joomla are two of the most important ones.
Both content management systems have their own benefits and limitations. With this article we have come up with some distinguishing features based on the usability.

Usability: Usability is the degree of ease of using a website or blog. Search engines give preference to those websites and blogs which have higher degree of usability and are more convenient in using. When it comes to usability, WordPress scores high in terms of usability and user convenience.

WordPress is simpler than Joomla as far as developer’s point of view is concerned. Due to its simplicity it is easy to earn. This can also be attributed to the fact that Joomla offers a wide range of features and attributes for developers than WordPress which makes it more complex and tough to learn the nuances of the content management system.

Versatility: As far as the versatility of a content management system is concerned Joomla is more equipped and versatile than WordPress. Joomla offers a wide variety of features and attributes which are not being provided by WordPress. WordPress is more of a content management system while Joomla covers all aspects of web-designing process.

If you are concerned about developing a simple blog or website without bothering much about the features and feel then WordPress is the best while if you want to give your website and blog an attractive and appealing look equipped with various features Joomla can be the best choice.

Search Engine Optimization advantages: When it comes to search engine optimization WordPress is more beneficial than Joomla. Due to the categorization and structure of the content WordPress blogs or website use to rank high in search engines than any other content management systems. However contents developed in Joomla can be made search engine friendly after a little customization.

Scalibility: Due to the availability of various features and attributes Joomla is more beneficial when we talk about scalability. WordPress is somewhat limited in this respect. If your intention is to create a website without equipping it with much attributes and graphics then WordPress is the best choice. However Joomla can provide a wide scope when it comes to transforming a simple website into complex one. WordPress has limited scope in that. Joomla can be scaled as required compared to WordPress.

Almost any application or feature can be developed conveniently using Joomla content management system. Joomla has been equipped with enough tools and attributes to modify and extend to meet specific needs. WordPress is fairly limited. There are add-on features available for WordPress as well in the form of WordPress plug-ins but they do not compare to the advanced features that can be developed as add on Joomla modules or components.

Integration: When it comes to integrating and extending your content management system with third party websites or software Joomla has clear advantages than WordPress. The API that comes with Joomla is a well-formed and more powerful than that of the WordPress. Joomla websites can easily be integrated with any website which is being hosted on some other third party platforms or can easily be integrated into a website.

Administrative features: As far as the administrative feature of the content management system is concerned WordPress has handy, easy to use and an API which is light weighted and easy to handle. WordPress is the best choice when we need to publish and manage only contents. It has an administration panel that limits the developers from updating or adding new media and content. However if you wish to develop a website that is rich of shopping cart, forum, user-management and document management then Joomla is the best choice to go for.

Developing a web-page is the first step in the whole process of promoting your website via internet. Developing a web-page is not a single process rather it is a combination of a lot of processes starting from designing your website to coding. With this article we have come up with some basic steps let’s run through these steps:

Designing the web-template on Photoshop: Designing the web-page is the first ever step in the whole process of making your website live on the World Wide Web. Generally web-pages are designed by using graphic designing software like Photoshop.
The file format that is generally used to save graphic files is .psd. Since the process involves a lot of intricacies and delicacies it should be designed by professionals who have a good hand on it.

Creating major files for the web-page: Creation of HTML, CSS and image file is the next step followed by the above mentioned process. Among these files is the index.html file which houses the entire home page or index page of the website.
Asides the designing part of the web-page is separated by creating a different file with .CSS extension. The images of the web-pages are stored in a separate folder called as .JPg or .PNG format.

Defining the major sections of the web-page with DIV attribute:
The third step involves defining the major sections of the web-page by Div attribute like DIV # header, DIV# Footer. Asides there are many other attributes like class which can be defined as per the requirement of the web-page. All these sections of the web-page are housed in a common Div called as “Container”.

Since the container houses the entire major and minor sections of the web-page it is mandatory that it is defined right at the beginning of the web-page.
Fourth step involves defining the background color of the web-page. The background color of the web-page is done by selecting color from a small area of the template body using the marquee tool. The hexadecimal representation of these colors can be seen by using the Eye dropper tool of the editor.

Fifth step involve coding for the background image of the web-page which involves setting of margin, defining the cell padding and border etc.

However this is not the end of the story and simply designing a web-page is not going to be the ultimate point rather webmasters need to buy a domain name for their web-page that will act as the web-address of your website and when clients request pages that are related to your website server direct the browsers towards your web address. So buying a domain name is the next step in the whole process of making your website live.

The buying of domain name is followed by buying server space for your web-page from a domain hosting service provider. The hosting service provider provides the web-space required hosting your web-page and you can upload files and folders through the control panel of the web-hosting service.

The architecture of the website is one of the most important aspects in the overall process of search engine optimization process. Website architecture can be focused on two goals one is improving the user-experience and second is making it search engine bots friendly.
In fact both of these phenomenons are co-related and if a website can provide great user experience it will automatically be valued by search engine bots.

It is because search engine bots are meant at providing relevant and appropriate contents to the users or in other words we can say that if a website can satisfy users, if they like to read the contents of the website, they want to share the content of the website on various social media channels, they trust on it then there is no reason that search engine bots will neglect the site.

With this article we have come up with some basic facts that can help webmasters and web developers make their website architecture more user and search engine friendly.

Inspect the global navigation system of the site: The global navigation system of your website is the medium by means of which the link juice of the home-page is distributed throughout the website. Generally the home-page of a website receives the highest number of back-links. So when as far as the link strength or link juice is concerned your home-page is the richest one. But if all your link juice and strength remains limited to the home page only search engine is not going to rank you higher in the search engine result page. Hence it is imperative for webmasters to provide a website architecture that can pass link juice from home-page to other category, sub-category and deep content pages. And this is done by global navigation system.

If you want to check whether your global navigation menu is working properly or not you want to disable your java-script on your browser, this will allow you know how search engines see your web-page. If global navigation system is working well after disabling the java-script it is good but if it is not working after disabling the java-script there is a clear indication that something is wrong with your global navigation system and it needs to be addressed promptly.

Category and Sub-category pages: When your website has a variety of pages, it is logical to segregate these pages into categories and sub-categories and then putting your content pages within these sub-category and category pages.

While creating category and sub-category pages webmasters need to make the ages as much user-friendly as possible. And to make the pages user friendly it should be ensured that users can navigate throughout the content easily without brainstorming their mind. Second thing that should be taken into consideration is that the content of the pages should be unique, useful and appealing to users.

A content which is appealing to users can do much better search engine optimization process. Third thing that should be considered is that your category and sub-category pages should act as “Link-juice routers” and the link that these category and sub-category pages are receiving from the home-page should be distributed to content pages and other deep-linked pages uniformly.

Content pages: Content pages are the pages for what your visitors have come to your website. In order to get the most benefit of your link-juice make sure your content pages doesn’t go beyond 3rd level click. Web-pages that are buried below 3rd level click are generally not accessible by search engine bots and your rankings in the search engine result page may go down. Some other factors that should be taken into consideration while creating the content page of your website are:

• Title tags

• URLs

• The actual content

• Images

Title tags: Title tag is one of the most important parts of your whole website architecture. Search engines display the title tags in their search engine result pages as the first line of the search snippet. According the search engine guidelines the title of a document should not be more than 60 characters. Anything beyond this will be truncated by search engines. It is a wise idea to include your primary keyword in the title tag of your web-page.

URL: If the URL is designed and articulated cleverly and wisely it can create wonders for your search engine ranking. URL should be written in a way so that it can provide contextual signals to search engines about the theme of the document. For example if your web-page is about blue sapphire engagement rings you want to write the url as www.yourwebsite.com/jewellery/engagement/rings/blue-sapphire-rings rather than writing www.mywebsite.com/products/sm10454567.

The former one sends clear indications to the search engines that the web-page is about blue sapphire engagement ring and thus it can rank your web-page much better. But in the later case there is no such clear cut indication about what the web-page is all about.
Second thing if someone links to your web-page using the URL of your page it will act as an anchor text but in later case it can’t be used as an anchor text which is not a wise move to go on.
Third thing that should be taken into consideration while making your URL search engine friendly is separate the words of the URL with dash (-) and not by underscore or any other symbols or spaces. It let search engines know that the two words are different and can make it clear what the word string is all about.

Content: No doubt the content of your web-page determines a lot the success of your website. The content should be descriptive, informative and appealing to the users so that they love reading it and want it to be shared along their social media networks. It helps webmaster reduce the bounce rate and increase the visibility time of the web-page.

Images: Images are not visible to search engine bots like humans. Hence webmasters need to provide “image alt” tags to let search engine know what the image is all about and help you ranking high in the search engine result page.

Hence, we can say that the architecture of your website plays a huge role in determining the search engine ranking of your website in the search engine result pages. Hence all the issues related to website architecture should be addressed right at the time of beginning of the website development.
